Vapor Lock

Vapor lock at start up of pump

With this type of vapor lock, the pump discharge pressure gauge doesn't show an increase in pressure when the pump first starts pumping. The piping should be inspected using the issued installation guidelines to identify and correct any piping problems.

Vapor lock after the pump has been running

With this type of vapor lock, the pump discharge pressure gauge shows pressure when the pump first starts pumping, but the pressure soon drops back down to the approximate pressure of the tank as the pump continues to operate. The impeller should be re-shimmed by removing shims until the pump binds then reinstall a shim. The by-pass valve set pressure might also be the cause. The by-pass valve should be set at the required differential pressure or set 5–10 psi below the maximum differential capability of the pump based on the motor horsepower and speed.
